Arcane Brotherhood

Well yesterday was a very productive day (if you consider sitting on your ass and playing video games all day productive, but thats a different story :P)

Deimonos assisted Hellie Layne (my wiz/pm) down in the Trog mines with his dev-crit meister Klumk, thus earning her enough XP to hit level 50. It was alot of work on Deimonos's part and for that I am grateful.

Now that Hellie is level 50 Deimonos offered guild leadership status to me and with that I created a new guild called the Arcane Brotherhood, which will be home for anyone with the ability to cast arcane spells. This guild will be dedicated to the study and mastery of the arcane arts through any means necessary. Knowledge is power, and death by sword is not an option.

The Fabled Level 8 Death Match

Well, here’s a quick blurb about the Level 8 Death Match that happened this week.

For those of you who don’t know what I’m talking about, it’s a new thing the DM’s are doing on occasion. Everyone that wants to participate creates a new character. They are given 10,000 gold and enough Xp to get to level 8. Then, when everyone is ready, we all get ‘ported’ to a new PK arena the DM’s have made. Sometimes the action is Team Based, sometimes its Last Man Standing free-for-all. This week it was Last Man Standing.

It was pretty fun, we had about 10 people participate. Hopefully that sort of thing will happen more in the future, as it really makes people think. How good a build can you make in 8 levels? It’s a challenge, and most importantly, Its something Different! We all know how cool RPG’s are, but we also know how stale games can get. Something Different usually = Something Good and Fun!

So Kudos’ to the DM’s! Keep it up, I had a blast!

Some Fucker is messing with the Blog

Pardon the language, but it pissed me off. Someone created a 'response' to my Post about the Level 8 Death match. It was a link to a Spyware website that tried to install itself on my comp. I had to CONT+ALT+DELETE to get it to stop and shut down. I deleted the post for now so no one else will get their computer messed up.

Just keep a watch out for suspicious looking posts, responses, ect.

" Free Traders " Guild now a Broad Church

Hiya, Blade here :)

Thankyou Simon for inviting me to contribute.

I have become the new Guild Leader of "Free Traders", and have changed the entry requirements to the guild, basically because I didn't know any better, and also to suit myself.

Free Traders used to be a sort of "Neutral " Guild, but i have all my chars in it now, and have invited several of my friends from the Dalakora server to join me with their chars. I have tried to create a refuge for those players who are seeking the protection of "Guild Colours", from the attentions of PKers etc. DMs Darian, Deimenos, Terry are aware of the fact that my guild has all alignments in it at present, but i am seeking to make the new workings of the guild as transparent as possible, to avoid any misunderstanding or transgressions on my part.

An example therefore of a player who does not "Fit the Mold " of Free Traders now is RAZ. He will not enjoy the protection of the guild, due to his reputation and past actions especially regarding the PKing of low chars in the Newport Sewers etc. He will be EXPELLED forthwith, as soon as i can do it.

I hope that the fact that "Free Traders " is perhaps now the Largest Guild and has chars in it from Lawful Good ranging to Chaotic Evil will not cause any problems for the Game at large. We undertake not to be too " Ambitious"

I would most welcome any comments regarding all of the above, and maybe a broadening of the topic to include Guild matters in general.

All the Best ..........Blade :)

Fun with Raz

Just thought I would share a short, entertaining story.

I was on this morning leveling a new character and the only other person on was Raz, playing a Bard/RDD/PM build. Well, suddenly I see that Raz has killed the Rakshasa. I was fairly surprised by this, as I didn't think he had the intelligence to figure out how to kill that boss with that build, but I didn't pay it much attention. However, when the server shouted that the Outpost in the Highwood Silent Forest had been claimed by the Free Traders, I was prompted into action.

I don’t have a problem with people taking territories that House Thanatos currently holds. I admit, it does create some competition, and if possible I will keep my territories, but it’s really not a big deal. BUT…Raz taking one of my territories…that’s just plain wrong and must be dealt with in the harshest manner possible. (Not to mention, who the *&%@ let Raz in a guild?)

So I logged of the newbie, logged on Belpheron, and waited. Sure enough, in about 5 minutes, I saw a shout that Raz had killed the Royal Assassin. Since the Outpost in the Newport Docks was currently owned by House Thanatos, I used my amulet to teleport there. Within a few seconds, Raz appeared next to me. He seemed a bit surprised to see someone else in the room with him, and was even more surprised when I began to hit him with Maximized “Isaac’s Greater Missile Storms”. It only took 2 of them, as he was already hurting from the fight with the Assassin. As he crumpled to the ground in the agonizing throes of death, I simply said…

“Mine”

He whined and cried for a bit, shouting some nonsense that I honestly didn't believe was worth a response as I simply went about the business of killing all the other bosses that he could attempt to kill to claim any more territories. In about 5 minutes, he left without another word, and I went back to leveling the newbie. Mission accomplished: Raz gets no more territories, and hopefully has less of a desire to play on our beloved server.

Not a bad way to spend a morning J

Hear ye, hear ye, all fellow NWN and D & D nerds/fans I implore your assistances to my gaming module.

I'm planning on having my module up for test playing on Tuesday, so if anyone wants to join and critique it, that will be cool. Mind you, it won't be 100% done, so if the cities are a little sparse, or NPCs are generic, just bear with me until it's all finished. At least it will be something cool to dick around with for awhile.

Happy Easter!!!

I won't be around this weekend so I'm posting early.

Happy Easter and good hunting!

P.S. The Easter Bunny has been delayed.

BaldLands Updates

Here's an email I recieved from "Q" about things that are changing on Badlands.

"Mosquito Wolfe and a few other areas were changed slightly, only because I found them to be mapped incorrectly to the rest of the realm.

In a future blog I’m sure you will talk about the new random monster trigger I’m working on.

The mechanical details in short are:

What was one big trigger is now a set of 4 small triggers. Only one of the 4 is ever working at once. Each time you trigger it, it sets up a different trigger to work next time. It is random and might select the same one twice. This also includes 4 random spawn points. Each part (trigger/spawn point) is separate of each other. I’m not limited to sets of 4, that’s just what I’m using during development. For now, only Dozo Warfields and the lowest four shelves on North Face are using the random monster trigger.

And yes, I have tried other random systems built by other people, but I never found one I liked so I am building my own. Mine won’t lag the server. (well I hope it won’t) like some did."

Build Question.

I'm placing enemies in my module, and I was wondering if anyone could tell me the ratio of enemy difficulty to character level? I know very easy difficulty is like lvl 1-3 or 4, but what about moderate through impossible? I want to try and make this as balanced as possible. Thanks.

If you were wondering...

So, after Deimonos posted the history of our beloved Raz... “beloved” here standing in for the words “Hated, Despised, Reviled, Herpes infested, Pathetic, Loathed and Hunted”…I felt inspired to inform everyone as to why I hunt Shadow512988 so relentlessly, and any Oki that befriends him.

I want to say first that I am a very happy, even tempered person who only finds pleasure in slaughtering innocents on a very limited basis. Just ask Deimonos and Darian, who I spend a lot of time with and who can attest to my jovial and capricious nature. I very rarely PK people, and hardly ever just for the fun of it, despite being the leader of House Thanatos.

Now then, on to the story…

Back a few months ago, I had just gotten Belpheron to level 21 and was in the Underdark upgrading all my equipment. Shadow512988 (hereafter referred to as ‘The Damned’) logged on and began to obey the biological imperative that prompts all Oki’s to invite everyone on the server into their group. We all know the behavior, we have both been unfortunate enough to have experienced it and have read about it on this Blog. Well, when the black box came up offering me the dubious honor of grouping with ‘The Damned’, I was only mildly annoyed, clicked ‘ignore’ and began to go through the process of upgrading my equipment again. Approximately 10 seconds later, the invitation ‘box’ came up again from ‘The Damned’. Now I’m beginning to get irritated, because not only do I not know the Ass Clown that is sending me these invitations, but it is getting in the way of me upgrading me equipment. I needed to swap some Ability points from one piece of equipment to another, and stopping to answer ‘The Damned’ was both interfering and distracting. Once again, I clicked ‘ignore’ and went back to business.

When the invitation box came up the third time, I was understandably frustrated. I again clicked ‘ignore’ and shouted “How many times do I have to refuse your invitation before you take the hint?” I now know that this was my mistake. Instead of using words to attempt to communicate with ‘The Damned’ I should have used either Mordred or Sidian to simply bash the Syphilis infected Oki into oblivion and gone back to business.

It was at this point that ‘The Damned’ decided to make this a game. He sent me invitations every 10 to 15 seconds for the next 30 minutes. He taunted me in shouts and tells, making fun of me while sending me invitations over and Over and OVER. Eventually I had to click the option of “Never Show Me This Again” on the invitation box. This means that whenever ANYONE sends me an invitation, instead of the invitation box coming up, all I get is a little yellow text notification in the same box as the Battle Spam.

This means that it is extremely easy to miss invitations from people that I actually want to group with. This means that because of the actions of ‘The Damned’ I was forced to change the way in which I interacted with my friends. This means that I was forced to change the way in which I play a game that I enjoy, simply because ‘The Damned’ is an Asshole. This is why I will hunt him down and kill him, Pick Pocket him of all his belongings, and make his playing time on this server as miserable as possible.

How to tell if you play too much NWN...

1. You're pissed off at life because you were born with a Charisma of 9.

2. You were held back in the 3rd grade because your ECL penalty was 2.

3. You think sharks are vicious animals that can roam on land but spend most of their time in desert oases.

4. Your wife/girlfriend thinks you're a complete dork.

5. Before you go into to a bar, your friends have to wait for you to "buff".

6. Your best pick-up line is, "Hey, what's your build?"

7. You tell the guy that looked at your girlfriend's ass that you're going to PK him in the parking lot.

8. (*correction to #7 above*) You don't have a girlfriend.

9. You ask the bank what the Dollar to Beryl exchange rate is.

10. When asked how hunting season was, you refer to the animals you saw as "spawns".

11. You memorize Bigbys Grasping Hand at ladies night.

12. You think XP stands for experience, not Microsoft's operating system.

13. You refer to your friends as Guild Members.

14. People at school ask what classes you're taking, and you say, "Fighter, bard, and red dragon disciple."

15. You refer to your masters degree as an 'epic level'.

16. You say "Ding!" on your birthday.

17. You refer to your room as your "claimed territory".

18. You ask for a Heal Kit instead of a Band-Aid when you cut yourself.

19. You sleep on the ground while fully clothed.

20. While singing karaoke, you receive bonuses to your AC, AB and saving throws.

21. You told your boss you wouldn't be coming in to work today because you failed your
save versus disease.

22. You refer to your banker as "Guzz".

23. You're jealous because your ex-girlfriend is dating Evard and she brags about his "black tentacle".

24. When asked to lift weights in gym class, you claim you can't because you're a "dex build".

25. You get most of these jokes.

Annoying players Part III - Jerks of the past

Here I am, the one and only Deimonos. I said once that I would do a topic about our most famous pk, Razius (login heater5). Well, let's start then.
Once upon a time, when the server had legendary players like Talon and Creeping Doom, we had the pleasure of this pk legend to join us. He wasn't a pk legend yet, just a regular player like any other one online back in the day. As the time moved on, we all lvled our chars, became stronger and friendship was build between the players. I could say all their names, but they have left our numbers, only a few remained I'm afraid. Ok, so after a while, this player earned a "promotion". He became beta. What is this "beta" status? I bet you've heard about it. Beta is given to players that manage the server, people who has an intimate knowledge of what Q wants to do with it. So after earning his new status; by earning, I mean, begging nonstop for days, probably weeks; this particular player got what he wanted. And then badlands went through its darkest period..

Our friend there, a friendly guy and average player, went from a total nice player behaviour to a total obsessive pk maniac..He had a bunch of chars around lvl 30, but what he really liked to do was making fresh lvl 40 chars.. to do what, you may be wondering? The answer is simple, for pking.

He liked to use his monk/assassin/sd to slaughter people down in the sewers. Dozens of players were massacred in that place. Remember once, when I'd logged on quickly just to get myself a dev shell, I saw a lot of shouts, pk shouts, our pk legend was bashing everyone.. players were angered, crying out for help. Even Darian the Bold was afraid. He sent me a tell, "raz owns here" "get down here, bash him". But I couldn't. I had to log.. I had to go to work..

Then, everytime I could, I hunted him down with my monk, Arikel Thunder. Everytime I got close enough to smash him, he ran away, didn't even try to fight back. Usually ported to one of territories. Yes, he had a guild too.
Never killed him. He was a jerk but he sure knew how to run. That's a shame.. But I made him feel scared. But It was too late. Many players had left the server. Ok, it was during the summer.. school was on a break and all, but it was his fault, no doubt. We had like 10+ players logged on all day..

When everything was getting out of control, Q made a pk system.. to help prevent his pk spree from happening. But it didn't help much. He still did it. Got sent to jail? Just make a fresh 40.. no biggie.

Then school vacation was over. He had to go back to school, so he stopped playing. Peace was back but the damage was already done. Then came the "earn your boss drop" thing and the few players still playing left. Lost Talon and Creeping Doom.. when all territories became available for claiming, Jajus and Mnich left too. Deurack had moved to a new place, so he was offline for months.

For a while it was maybe 3 or 4 players hanging around during the day and even less after midnight. Remember many nights playing with only Darian and icewear. Terry was there sometimes too. It was sad, we really thought the server was coming to an end. We were pissed. How can one jerk screw our server so bad? "If the server survives, we won't let it happen again" Darian and I said. When Raz comes back in the end of the year, we'll be ready for him. We may get banned, but we'll make it worth..

So November came, then December and no sign of our pk bud. Q said that he'd lost his game cds. We were really hoping to meet him again. We really wanted to give him a friendly welcome, especially when we found out that he wasn't beta anymore. And finally he was back. There he was, logging on again, back on the server he almost destroyed. After some time, when his char was high enough, we hunted him in the sewers, like he used to do. Darian and I cornered him near the stairs to Newport and our fight began. Darian dispelled his buffs and I kd him to his death..
He cried a little and we remembered him about his past. He laughed and ported do dozo and stayed there for a long time..

It was enough. He knew what would happen to him if he tried to do it again. He was scared, we could tell.

So, he started emailing Q about his beta. He wanted it back so bad.. he didn't understand why he couldn't have it back. That's how screwed up in the head that guy is. Why he wanted it back? Because me and Darian would hunt him down everytime he logged, so without beta to make a free char at any lvl he wanted, he wouldn't stand a chance against us.

Luckly he didn't get it back. Too bad for him. And he's still loggin. Not that much since he didn't get what he wanted and we are on everyday. Last time he logged, me and Deurack had a go at him.
Deurack asked him if he was still begging to be beta again and the pk boy answered with one lie after another. He said he didn't want to be beta again. That he wasn't afraid of us. And finally, that he was just playing his alignment."How about playing your alignment with players within your lvl range?" "Oh, you don't want to be beta? Weird that Q himself told me you are emailing him, asking to be beta again.." "What? Abuse DM powers to punish you? I could just log with one of my many earned chars and hunt you down. What now? Dozo is a nice place to stay? And your are not afraid? Sure, why don't you leave Dozo then and come to UD? No? Ok, say that you are not afraid again.."

After that chat, we thought we had enough and resumed our xping.
Well, that's pretty much what I had to tell you about our "pk legend".. good hunting folks..

The Nature of Evil

A couple days ago, I'm running through the Newport sewers trying to grab a couple of levels when I come across a group of three characters. My character being chaotic evil, I didn't hesitate to PK them. After quickly dispatching the group, I continued along on my merry way for more vampire killing and leveling. Although I didn't steal their gold or stay around to pester them, I received a hailstorm of verbal abuse over 'tells' and via 'shouts' on the server.
Yesterday, one of the guys I PKed named Padrier (login name aka98) starts chastising me for PKing them, demanding I give a good reason (and not "because it was funny"). Being the gentleman that I am, I tried explaining the situation: a chaotic evil PC comes across someone weaker than himself- nuff said. Well, Padrier goes into a 10 minute diatribe about how you shouldn't PK someone lower level than you and that because his character is chaotic evil, I shouldn't have killed him because "you can't kill someone of the same alignment." I said I was sorry that his ass was still chapped about the whole ordeal, but I refused to apologize for doing it. He said PKing like that will cause people to "get upset and quit the game." Look, Padrier, there are plenty of no PvP servers out there. Also, the Badlands RPG PvP rules are MUCH more strict than most PvP servers that allow it. If he didn't like what happened to him on Saturday, he wouldn't have lasted 5 minutes back in the Razius Sewers of Death days.
I can't go into detail about all of his complaints, but I will say it was an endless stream of whining and crying. One thing that I thought was completely off-base was his bitching about how casters are worthless on the server because "everyone has spell resistance, so it's not fair." I'm sorry, but IMO casters in the BL are some of the toughest badasses around. They're also usually the only ones that can kill bosses.
So if you see Padrier, tell him Elric Darkfyre sends his regards. But don't PK him, unless you want to listen to someone grovel and whine for 30 minutes.
BTW, if you want to learn more about the chaotic evil alignment, check out this summary on NwN wikia: Chaotic evil
I would say I was completely playing my alignment. You be the judge.

A screenshot view of last night's adventures

After killing a boss, some of us (not me) ended up getting pummeled by hordes of freaking polar bears because some people don't know how to sneak.

After that, we went on a bit of a rampage, and a couple people left, leaving poor Sheccol and Drake Vega to find something fun to do. So we decided to kill troglodytes - well, Vega killed them, Sheccol just kind of stood around. After a little while, we were joined by Grond. At this point, we started getting shit dropped on us by the DM Ari. In the space of about 30 minutes we fought several armies of LeShay's...

...the drow weapon master...

...FGBA and several cronies...

...Mephistopheles...

...Dark Ryuji (here I am turned to stone)...

...ard several others. After we got bored with that, we headed back to Dozo for some coversation and fun. And then (be sure to read the conversations as well)...

What's this? Server Information gone mad!

It's a horrible scene...

...leading eventually to Vega getting chased by half of Dozo.

Including some of the slave people.

Actually, most of the slave people.

So while not much was accomplished once bosses started flying around like darts, a good time was had by all.

Oasis Resort

Here's a post for the total BadLands Newb. This is the Oasis Resort, the starting place for character creation before you head out into the world of BadLandsRPG.

This friendly fellow is the Slave Master. You talk to this guy in order to log your character into the server, he will give you gold and some XP to get started on your adventure, but before talking to him I highly suggest selecting a sub-race for your character that compliments your primary race and the type of character class that you'll play.

Here's where you select your sub-race. If you're an Elf, talk to the Elf and so forth, each person standing there has a list of sub-races you may choose from, in order to understand which sub-race has what benefit go and examine the DARII subrace engine. It lists everything you need know, it's the glowing blue thing along the opposite wall shown in the picture below.

Here's the DARII subrace description thing, make sure to check this out, it's totally worth it in the long run to spend a few extra minutes at character creation to choose a good sub-race. Also, you can get a downloadable version of this text to print out from Qwildurns DnD server, the site link is in the sidebar.

This message board just lists the different updates that the DM's have done to the server. Make sure to check it out once in awhile, it saves you bugging the DM's if you notice changes. Although most of the DM's are very helpful and will enjoy spending extra time helping a new player. Especially "Darian The Bold", if you see him log in make sure to ask him ALOT of questions.

This crazy looking dog cat monster thing has the server rules and other information, reading this will also save you bugging the DM's, but again, Darian will be MORE than happy to help you out.

This stuff here won't interest you until you've earned enough XP to get to level 41. These items here are the Legendary Level Controls which allow you to take your character all the way to level 60.

We'll, you've finally managed to read all the rules and select a proper sub-race, here's the first thing you'll see when you leave the Oasis Resort. The small desert town called Dozo. More on Dozo later.

Grinding Levels

Last night I ground Marin Dark Angel up to like level 26'ish at the mountain slide, thanks to help from Zsy Dy'nein. With Marin's cleric buff's and Zsy's sneak attacks we were unstoppable. Until "Q" showed up and started dropping bombs, Zsy and Marin fared well until the Mighty Frost Giant Jackass showed his ugly face. The critical hits were most devastating, turning Marin into a large pile of bones and red mist. Thankfully we gained some XP from the whole ordeal and learned that Marin and Zsy are pretty tough in the mid 20's.

Annoying Players Part II

Ok, I finally broke down and killed someone out of sheer anger yesterday, thanks to some help from my good buddy Jim we smashed Rome Ledak (Moili Rumnatenk) into next week. That kid is seriously mental, the whole thing started while I was level 8 in the Shadow Tombs.

First off he was using 'Shout' trying to find a group around level 15, then all of a sudden he comes barging into the Tombs and starts spamming me with invites, he says "Hi" and then runs up to the spawns I was trying to kill and he takes the kill for himself, and then he just runs away. I tell him to get the heck out of here and not to kill my spawns. To which he replys "I was just passing through" which reminded me of something very annoying about this particular player.

That jackass WALKS everywhere and seldom uses a port stone, I friggin' hate that shit. Back when he first came on the BL scene he was partied with us and would never port to the next area that the group was headed, oh no he begged us all to WAIT for his stupid ass to walk there. I know that you can't always port exactly to where you need to be, but there's no reason to be level 15 tromping through the tombs almost spawn killing all the lowies and then having the nerve to steal the spawns that the lowies are working on, it's just bad conduct in my opinion.

So to pay him back for his idiocy Jim and I logged in with some lvl 15 Ogres and shredded him while he was walking through the Crystal Coast, lemme tell ya it felt good too. It's funny that he got super pissed so we told him to quit stealing XP from people in the Tombs, haha.

Assassins Reign

Few interesting things this past weekend.

1.) My first time ever playing in a tournament style game, apparently BL has a few areas that the DM's can port you into for team battle's or deathmatch style games. The level character you could use was capped 8, which was kinda cool because you really have to know your shit in order to make a decent warrior in 8 levels. If you don't have a level 8 on hand you are given the option to create a new toon and the DM would give you 8 levels and then port you into the arena. Aside from the typical whiny players that can't handle a defeat, it was pretty fun. I ended up being on the winning team and "Q" (I think it was) awarded us with a sweet bag of holding.

2.) Started a few new builds, but it's been awhile since I've played through the lower level areas and I think Mosquito Wolfe has been changed around a little, making it a bit more difficult to just run into the caverns I don't know maybe it's just me.

3.) And the most interesting thing of all, Im a little shy on details but apparently now there are some assassins on BL that for a price will 'off' someone for you.
